The focus of my capstone project is going to be about my partner and I going to several of Connecticut’s large public parks in the greater Harford area, among which will be Manchester, Bristol, Berlin and East Hartford, and trying to restore them by picking up and disposing of the waste properly. We will try to get huge groups of people to get out and cleaning by enticing them with the chance to earn crucial service learning hour. Also, we will try to get the word out about helping the environment. I am interested in this topic because I am very fond of the outdoors and it is clear that some parks are in desperate need of help. I do know that with this project, we possibly could make it into giant work effort that is ongoing even after our time at the school is done.
My essential question is “What factors cause individuals to disrespect the environment?”. The link between the research and the service is that we will use the factors we find to educate the public about correctable mistakes that cause litter and waste in parks. We most likely will present our knowledge by putting up flyers and signs in the parks that we helped to clean. We will also have a service website that will help us to get the word out. Our website will be designed to match the logo of our organization. We will also place informational blogs and links on the site to educate the public.
At the moment, our mentor is Edward Swicklas. He is a head member of the Connecticut Parks and Recreation Board. His expertise of the parks will help us to plan a feasible plan of what parks are in need of cleaning and recycling help. This, in turn, will allow for us to sufficiently and effectively clean Connecticut to the best of our ability.
